About This Painting

One of my Beautiful Strangers? encounters led to this painting.

Beautiful Strangers are ‘portraits of friends I have never met.’

I met Blythe in the market. She may have generated the slowest double-take on record. She was in line at the quick check-out at the grocery store, and I was on my way to the produce section and had to cut in front of her just to get by.

I smiled as I inched my cart into the space in front of her so she wouldn’t think I was just busting through. She smiled at me and back up to let me through. And the light caught her just so.

I saw a painting in my mind as I passed by her.

All the way to the bagged Baby Spinach and organic carrots, I tried to talk myself out of asking her to be in a painting of mine. Finally, I just asked myself, “Who are you kidding? How are you going to paint a face like that if you don’t ask her?”

So I did. And she agreed.

She was a natural. Every which way she turned her head she looked like another painting. She brushed her hair through her fingers and I said “Hold that… …Okay… …let go of your hair.” A single strand of her hair dropped and curled around into the light. ?

January 15, 2012 at 5:03AM by Jim DiPeso |

My first computer was a 386 PC. Its hard drive topped out at 160 megs. Paid $400 for the machine. It was fabulously useful two decades ago. Today, it’s taking up space in an upstairs closet, an obsolete, outdated museum piece that I couldn’t give away, except perhaps to a PC museum.

The laptop on which this is being typed cost two and a half times as much as the 386 in nominal dollars. It has 1,000 times as much hard drive capacity as the 386 and runs a whole lot faster.

Technology marches on … except for those folks with an ax to grind who assert that the way things are today are the way they will always be.

Witness the saga of the Chevrolet Volt. GM’s “extended range” high-mileage baby, which supplements an electric motor with a small internal combustion engine, has caught flak because in a handful of cases, battery fires broke out days or weeks after the Volt was crash-tested. See, the champions of the energy status quo argue, electric vehicles will never work. They catch fire. Well … so do gasoline-fueled conventional cars. Some 200,000 accidental car fires broke out in 2010, according to a recent report from the National Fire Protection Association. Gasoline is flammable. Always has been, always will be.

Back to my point. Similar it-will-never-work arguments have been raised in connection with Solyndra, the solar manufacturer that took a dive when the business model for its untried design collapsed along with the prices of competing photovoltaic products. See, the status quo cheerleaders argue, solar will never work. The federal government threw away half a billion dollars of the taxpayers’ scratch subsidizing crony capitalists peddling an impractical, uneconomic technology.

At the risk of beating a dead light bulb, those arguments are similar to the meme about federal lighting efficiency standards, that busybody bureaucrats are forcing people to get rid of cheap, reliable incandescent bulbs in favor of weird-looking fluorescents that give people headaches.

Such arguments betray a political agenda that does not square with history. Technology advances in some ways that we might be able to predict but in many ways that we cannot foresee. Fun fact: if computer chips had not advanced beyond the state of the technology as it was in 1975, the Apple iPod would cost $1 billion and would be very difficult to put into your pocket because it would be the size of a building.

Thomas Edison’s great-grandson, Barry Edison Sloane, recently wrote an op-ed saying his ancestor would be delighted at the technological improvements that have delivered new lighting products to consumers and would be frustrated at the anti-efficiency light brigade’s mossbacked opposition to innovation.

Edison’s lab in West Orange, New Jersey is a national historic site. Chances are excellent that today’s critics of technological innovation will not be so honored in the future. Perhaps one of them would like to have my old 386.

Winter has never been my favorite season. I don’t mind the cold as much as I mind losing daylight so EARLY. I came home tonight, paced around the house nervously, ate everything that couldn’t out run me, and then decided I needed to do something “productive” with my time. Which tonight, will be blogging.

I’ve been playing with works on small little canvases. They all are at risk of being painted over at any second, but I’m trying to let ideas evolve and just have some fun without “wasting” too much time or paint. Above is my caged girl in progress… not sure where this one is going but I’m imagining some little imps, swinging in the branches.Above is an old raven I did after downloading some works of Poe. I know there’s nothing particularly artsy or abstract about it, but sometimes you just feel like you should collage a crow. So there.

And along the same lines, below is a tiny little work I call “Saturday Morning,” which looks more like a “Saturday Morning Bloodbath” but that’s merely coincidental. And the keys? Actually, I had ordered a necklace on Etsy and had just put it on there to remind myself to put it up and I thought it looked neat. I’m pretty certain this painting isn’t long for this world, but I do like the general idea more than the unfortunate outcome. I sure would like some scrambled eggs now, though.

And last but not least is a painting that I really have grown to love, and for me to LOVE (and admit that I love) one of my paintings? is pretty rare. I added more flowers, altered the colors of existing flowers, and put a few finishing touches on to ensure this one is FINISHED. Sometimes you just want to look at something that’s pleasing and not feel like you have to “think” about it.

Okay! I’m off to have “reading time” with the family (which drove my 14 year old into bed at 9:15 to avoid it all together.) I started the Hunger Games series and, despite the teen love/angst, am just devouring the second book.

Peugeot and GTi. Two words which entered the automotive history books with the arrival of the original 205 GTi. Since that car, Peugeot have never managed to produce another hot hatch that matched the 205 GTi?s go-kart like handling. And thanks to the more neutral handling characteristics of modern cars, chances are they never will. Despite that, they?ve decided to have another go at the GTi, this time using the 208 as a starting point.

The Peugeot 208 GTi concept is powered by the same 200 horsepower, 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine available in the RCZ coupe. The transmission is a six-speed manual driving the front wheels. A wider track and some larger brakes are designed to improve the GTi concept?s handling and braking over the standard car.

On the outside there are a number of changes designed to help the 208 GTi stand out. It features chequered-flag motifs that embellish the metal mesh of the grille, and the lower bar is decorated with the French ?Le Tricolour? flag. However when the car goes to the UK it will wear the Union Jack.

Other upgrades include double chromed exhaust tailpipes, new wheels, different bumpers and lower sill skirt extensions.

On the inside, the 208 GTi concept is fitted with a smaller diameter leather wrapped steering wheel, matching gear stick, double stitched Nappa leather sports seats, LED backlighting, and Alcantara trimmed dashboard.

The Peugeot 208 GTi concept will make its world debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show next month. And while it?s just a concept for now, a production version shouldn?t be too far behind.

I?m particularly happy to see the foreshortening of the figure working well.

Pitture infamanti were part of a tradition that was designed to cause humiliation to its target by displaying in public the shame of the person who had offended the authorities, ideally ruining their reputation. Public humiliation was an established form of punishment in North Italian cities for people who had offended public morality, including the practices of stripping the victim naked and chaining him to a post in the town square, wearing a paper pointed hat with his crimes written upon it. Other punishments included degrading the victim by making him ride a donkey backwards, holding its tail, or being forced to kiss the bottom of a pig.

If criminals had escaped the city, punishment became tricky ? how was justice to be done? For debtors and traitors who had fled the answer was that paintings of them were commissioned to humiliate them in their absence, revealing their shame to the people. There are numerous records of the commission of such works, which were displayed in cities all over North Italy, but none have survived to the present because they were placed outside in the crowded plazas and market places, where both the weathering of the elements and the damage inflicted upon them by stone-throwing enemies took their toll upon the paint. In addition changes in government sometimes made them obsolete as last week?s enemy became this week?s friend, in which case they could suddenly become embarrassing and were quickly disposed of.

Love is in the air this week, so I?m hoping to take in more than a few deep breaths of it! I?m sure we all want Valentine?s Day to be as near to perfect as it can possibly be, and I was wondering what three things would make it exactly that? A few blogging lovelies were lovely enough to answer. Enjoy them, Friends!

Jane of simple + pretty:
?a pretty pink libation, like the rose sherbet from Australia?s Belinda Black Catering, would make the perfect Valentine?s drink. I definitely have a sweet tooth, and so to go with the rose sherbet, I?d love an assortment of heart-shaped shortbreads and homemade marshmallows from Stewart & Clark. Valentine?s Day is all about pink for me. This pretty pink tee shirt from Tuss doesn?t come in my size, but I hope to find something similar to wear this spring.

Lillian of Unstitched:
?cooking a simple dinner with the man I love, enjoying the meal with him without any distractions, and then indulging in something chocolaty to finish the night!

For me, Valentine?s Day isn?t about the bells and whistles; it?s about taking a day to really appreciate the people you love. I never choose to do anything fancy that day, which saves us from fighting crowds at restaurants with overpriced fixed menus! Instead, I love staying at home and preparing a meal with my man, because then we get to enjoy the simple moments of just being together. In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, this is a day that we remember to slow down and appreciate each other. To have a day like this is a treasure.

And, because I love chocolate, I?d definitely love to end the day with some decadent, quality chocolate. My top choices would be salted caramel chocolate truffles or dark chocolate-covered strawberries!

Emily of Name 5 Things:
?to have a little fairy come pack our house that just sold and move us out; to skip the roses and chocolate and receive a pair of Louboutin pumps instead; and to spend the day with my husband in the most romantic place ever: Paris!

Caroline of Greedy Girl:
?a few pretty, vibrant prints to help build a gallery art wall in our new home. These paintings by (clockwise from top) Molly Dilworth, Diana Delgado, and Theo Altenberg definitely fit the bill with their bright splashes of color. It?d be impossible to look at such a collection and feel anything but love!

?-

Thank you, ladies, for sharing your brilliant wishlists. I hope they all come true. Your turn, Friends! Will you tell me the three things that would make your Valentine?s Day perfect? Write them down and let?s make sure they happen!

Stack of Ritter Sport chocolate found here.
